Many people have trouble sleeping. Not being able to sleep can be one of the most frustrating experiences. It is a terrible feeling to have during the day when you have not slept. Even worse is when we lie down the next evening, only to lay awake for another night. When we don’t sleep, our physical health suffers as well as our emotional health.
Many people go through periods of time where sleep is broken. Having young children is probably the most common. This is normal and our bodies can adjust in other ways during these seasons. What becomes more of a problem is when there is nothing physical keeping us awake, and we simply cannot unwind well enough to sleep. Or perhaps our bodies are so used to being wakened frequently that we never enter into a deep enough sleep to feel fully rested.
If there are no children waking us up in the night and we have time and space to sleep, and we cannot seem to get there, then we may find some of these suggestions helpful. Sleep experts recommend sleeping in total darkness. They say it helps our melatonin levels, (which is a naturally occurring hormone in our body) and allows us to truly rest when we sleep, making our sleep a better quality. If we cannot ensure our room is completely dark, then we may find an eye mask does the trick, or even better, an eye mask infused with a sleep inducing scent like lavender or chamomile.
Before going to the Dr. and asking for a prescription to help you sleep, it may be worth your while to try some natural remedies. A cup of good quality chamomile tea in the evenings, or a blend of several rest inducing herbs such as Valerian have helped many people. Melatonin is a hormone that we have naturally in our bodies that helps us to sleep, and it can be supplemented with drops or a spray. A few drops of melatonin may be all it takes.
Often all it takes is a little bit of help to get back into healthy sleep patterns. Often it’s just changing one thing, like not drinking that last cup of coffee in the afternoon. For others they will benefit from a darker sleep environment or an herbal tea. For most people, these gentle remedies are all it takes.
