A new report has been published by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which describes silicone breast implants as “relatively safe”. Although complications occur frequently, and patients face a slightly increased risk of lymphoma, the FDA said the risks are sufficiently well understood for people to make informed decisions. The report found that 20% of breast augmentation patients had the implants taken out after 10 years, and that around 10 million women have breast implants globally.

In 1992, silicone implants were banned in the US due to concerns about rupture and leakage. In 2006, however, 2 brands were approved for women over the age of 22. Saline-filled implants remained available during that period, whilst silicone implants were allowed in specific circumstances, such as for mastectomy patients.
