Diagnosing genital herpes symptoms in men by simply looking at them is easier said than done for most physicians. The disease’s symptoms often appear similar to those of several other sexually-transmitted diseases and skin conditions, and can vary greatly in severity from one sufferer to another. For example, whereas some men will develop a minor skin irritation (one that resembles any number of other skin conditions) during a breakout, others will exhibit the clusters of fluid-filled blisters commonly associated with the infection.
The following herpes symptoms in men look like other skin conditions:
Emergence of Blisters
Without doubt, the symptom most-commonly associated with herpes in men is the formation of blisters on or around the genitals. Less known by the general public, however, is that this symptom is also seen in cases of Eczema, Impetigo, Syphilis, and yeast infection. Whereas the blisters associated with Eczema and Impetigo may appear in the genital region (although it’s uncommon), those blisters that form during the second stage of a Syphilis infection, and during a primary yeast infection definitely will. For this reason, genital herpes sores are sometimes misdiagnosed as Syphilis or Candidiasis (yeast infection).
Draining Sores and Ulcers
As is the case with the other diseases and conditions mentioned in the preceding section, herpes blisters eventually burst – leaving behind sores and ulcers indistinguishable from those caused by other conditions. However, these lesions can also be mistaken for those that result from picking at acne, or scratching rashes and other irritations associated with allergies. Another painful skin condition which causes swelling and cracking of tissue, Lichen Sclerosis, also produces ulcers and sores like those found in the wake of a herpes outbreak.
Reddish, Swollen Patches of Skin
Reddish, swollen patches of skin on the genitals and groin represent one of the hardest symptoms to accurately diagnose because, while they may very well result from a herpes outbreak, they can also be caused by a myriad of other factors. Everything from the previously discussed Candidiasis, Eczema, Impetigo and Lichen Sclerosis, through allergic reactions to cosmetic goods and overly-tight clothing can contribute to irritation of the skin.
While the content of this article undoubtedly provides food for thought to the man who is experiencing any of the symptoms described, it should also serve as an impetus toward seeking a consultation with a licensed physician. Only by accurately diagnosing the cause of your symptoms can you be sure to receive the proper treatment, and place yourself on the road back to good health.
